11 Fun & Festive Autumn Photoshoot Ideas You Will Love
Don’t have time to read it now? Save it for later!
Fall is an amazing time for photography! The leaves are changing, fall fashion (aka sweaters and cute beanies) are back and the festivities are perfect for themed shoots.
These Autumn photoshoot ideas are perfect to start your fall season off with!
While the pumpkin patch is always a favorite for Fall, I thought I would create a little bit of a different type of list, you can expect more outdoorsy-focused photoshoots on this list.
Below I have listed 10 of my favorite Fall shoots I have done over the years!
Photoshoot Idea #1: A Fall Road
This Autumn photoshoot idea is such a Fall classic- with the leaves turning brilliant colors of orange, yellow and red this shoot is one of the easiest ways to take advantage of all that beautiful color.
Cozy up in a cute sweater, grab your car keys, and head to your state’s most scenic drive.
I like to look for cute curvy roads, lots of foliage, and not too many cars.
Forest roads can be perfect options because they are normally pretty quiet!
It can be cute to sit in the road, pose or even run/ walk away from the camera down the road.
Photoshoot Idea #2: The State Fair
While this may technically be an end of summer festivity, for me it always signals the beginning of Fall!
Shooting at the fair is SO much fun- you have so many different lights to play with, motion from the rides to blur and you can bust out your cutest outfits.
I personally love shooting the Fair at sunset and blue hour (the hour after sunset).
There is still enough light that you can do portraits if you bump up your ISO a bit and the neon lights from the rides pop just that much more.
If you want to play with motion blur try bringing your shutter speed down to around 1/40th or 1/30th of a second.
If you can stand steady enough you should be able to capture portraits with a bit of fun blur from the rides!
Pro tip: bring a tripod with you if you really want to make sure your images turn out sharp.
Photoshoot Idea #3: A Cozy Lake Shoot
This Autumn I drove out to Montana to capture the leaves changing there.
I was astounded by how many gorgeous lakes there were to be captured! These lake shoots ended up being some of my favorite from the trip.
Head out at sunrise to see if you can get fog on the lakes!
Normally, when the temperature is changing from cold to warmer you will start to see the fog sitting right on top of the lake, it makes for a beautiful fall photoshoot.
If you want to scream “Autumn Vibes” you can add a cozy blanket, cup of tea or coffee, and a cute beanie!
Photoshoot Idea #4: Campfire Photoshoot
Fall is a perfect time to head out to a riverbank, lake, or a cute forest campsite and have yourself a campfire.
This photoshoot is really a win-win, not only do you get cute fall photos but you also get smores, a warm fire, and some good company.
In Montana we went out at sunrise and had a fire by the lake, we brought tea and blankets and watched the sun come up from over the water with a bunch of friends.
You can make your own spin on this and bring whatever type of props you want- smores, beanies, cozy blankets, camp chairs- you name it!
Autumn Photoshoot Idea #5: Hot Springs Photoshoot
Who doesn’t love a good hot spring?! It’s nature’s hot tub!
Autumn is the perfect time to find the closest hot spring to you and go for a good long soak. It’s not only relaxing but it can make for some stunning autumn photography.
I personally love trying portraits in hot springs- you can get super creative getting your face close to the water and playing around with poses.
It has all the elements of a beautiful water shoot- but it’s even better because you are warm!
Photoshoot Idea #6: A Cozy Cabin
When I think of Fall I think of changing colors, warm beanies, and cozy cabins.
A Fall photoshoot is a perfect excuse for a cabin getaway.
I like to choose cabins that either have a beautiful fireplace or outdoor hot tub and are situated in the woods, along a riverbank, or on a lake. This gives you so many options for photo locations!
Check out this post for a cabin in Washington that is perfect for Fall photoshoots!
Autumn Photoshoot Idea #7: Hiking Along A Trail
Autumn is such a gorgeous time for hiking- the air is brisk, there are fewer people and the foliage is brilliant!
Google “best Fall hikes” in your area and I am sure you will find an amazing trail to go explore! I personally love shooting hiking photos in the Fall.
If you can get that golden light around sunset or sunrise and backlight the trees- even better!
Remember, that in the mountains many times sunset is about 30 minutes earlier than normal because the peaks can block the sun. I aim to start shooting a bit earlier than I normally would somewhere else.
Photoshoot Idea #8: In A Field
Okay, okay I know what your thinking…really Liana, a field?!
But actually in Fall fields are a great place to try some beautiful and different concepts! The grass is usually the perfect tan color to go with the Fall color palette and you can mess around a lot with different ideas.
This is a great place to try out fun poses with props- maybe a chair or a ladder? I liked playing around with a jacket and a blanket!

Autumn Photoshoot Idea #9: Fall Foliage Shoot
During Autumn the leaves take center stage. Do yourself a favor and use that to your advantage!
I love doing portraits in the Fall- and right now is the perfect time to play around with leaves.
Throw them in the air, put your face in between them and play with the shadows, hold a leaf in front of your eye or mouth, I’ve even seen some people pretend to wear them as skirts or paste them to their face in a beautiful mosaic.
Get creative, this one is probably the most fun!
Photoshoot Idea #10: A Corn Field
Last year, my friend and I headed out to a cornfield in Utah- we thought it would be funny to shoot in the cornfield at a big family festival but honestly, it turned out to be one of our favorite shoots from the trip.
Playing within the cornfield gives you tons of options for depth, leading lines, poses, and more! You can go more lifestyle with it or more editorial by throwing in some weird poses.
Photoshoot Idea #11: A Canoe
Trust me on this one, a canoe photoshoot has got to be on your list.
There truly is nothing as wonderful as canoeing out onto a calm lake surrounded by beautiful Fall trees.
The photo options are truly endless on this one.
Give your camera to someone on the shore and have them take a scale shot of you out on the lake (bonus points if there is fog!)
Bring your camera with you in the boat and take portraits, or maybe take lifestyle images of you rowing away!
Like many of these other fall photoshoots, this one will benefit from some props- a cute blanket, a fuzzy beanie, and a Fall colored sweater will do the trick!
Conclusion
So there ya go, my top 11 Autumn photoshoots! I hope you guys found some inspiration from these images and are stoked to get out there and create with the changing season.
