How Many Days Do You Need On The Oregon Coast?

The length of time you need for an Oregon Coast road trip truly depends on how much you want to explore, but generally, 3 to 7 days is ideal. Here’s a breakdown to help you plan:

3 Days

A 3-day trip allows you to see the highlights of the Oregon Coast, perfect for a long weekend getaway. You can pick a region (North, Central or South) and spend your time exploring there!

5 Days

With five days, you can cover the entire coast at a relaxed pace or dive deeper into one or two regions. This option lets you enjoy more scenic stops, hiking trails, and coastal towns.

7+ Days

A full week or more is ideal for a full Oregon Coast road trip. You will have plenty of time to explore every major attraction in each region and really feel like you have seen all of what this gorgeous coastline has to offer!

What is the prettiest part of the Oregon Coast?

The Oregon coast is truly a place like no other, and you really can’t go wrong anywhere you go! In saying that, I do have my personal favorites- and as a photographer that definitely is influenced by how “pretty” a place is.

The most beautiful sections of each region:

– Northern Region: Cannon Beach and Ecola State Park. This area feels like quintessential Oregon Coast vibes to me, the town is adorable, the beach is gorgeous and the forests in Ecola State Park make you feel like your in a fairytale.

– Central Region: Pacific City and Cape Kiwanda. Cape Kiwanda is truly a photographers heaven- with gorgeous sandstone cliffs, and huge dunes this area is absolutely breathtaking.

– Southern Region: Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor. Another spot that will take your breath away, the more rugged southern coast features rugged sea stacks, beautiful rock formations and secluded forests. This area is my personal favorite for photography!

What Is The Best Month To Drive The Oregon Coast?

In my opinion the Oregon Coast is a year round destination, I have spent Summers vacationing there, road tripped down in the middle of Winter and explored in the Spring. It truly just depends on what you are looking for!

I will say, Winters can get quite wet if you are car camping or living in a Van. I would highly recommend early Fall (September) or Summer time for true road trips!

• Best Month for Clear Skies and No Crowds: September.
• Best for Family Road Trips & Warmer Weather: July or August.
• Best for Quiet and Storm Watching: November through February.
• Best for Whale Watching: March or April.

What Is The Most Scenic Route On The Oregon Coast?

The Oregon Coast Scenic Byway (also known as U.S. Highway 101) is the most scenic route along the coast, offering stunning vistas, dramatic cliffs, charming towns, and endless photo opportunities! While the entire stretch is filled with breathtaking sights, a few particular sections are well renowned for their natural beauty.

• Northern Coast: Cannon Beach to Ecola State Park for iconic coastal views.
• Central Coast: Cape Perpetua to Thor’s Well for dramatic cliffs and natural wonders.
• Southern Coast: Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor for rugged beauty and quiet beaches.

Every stretch offers something unique, so take your time to explore and stop at viewpoints along the way to fully take in the coastal beauty.

Where To Start Your Oregon Coast Road Trip

There are a few spots you can start your Oregon Coast Road trip, the most natural point will be wherever is closest to you but starting in the North (Cannon Beach or Astoria) and heading South is my personal favorite!

• For Iconic Views: Start in Astoria or Cannon Beach to experience coastal landmarks like Haystack Rock and the Astoria Column.
• For Nature Lovers: Start in Florence or Newport for dune adventures, wildlife watching, and beautiful hiking.
• For a Quiet, Secluded Start: Begin in Brookings to explore the hidden gems of the southern Oregon Coast.

Road Trip Essentials

There are a few things that will make a road trip extra comfortable.

My Road trip Favs:

Insulated Mug: I love having a warm coffee or tea each morning, this one is perfect!

Camp Stove or Backpacking Stove: Having the ability to make tea, lunch or dinner while on the road is one of my favorite things! Pick a backpacking stove for a small version or level up with a cute camp stove!

Hammock: Give yourself the ability to just hangout and relax in this double nest hammock!

Lantern: Having access to light is essential! I personally love this inflatable lantern or this pro lantern!

Compressible Pillow: Car ride naps anyone?! Bring along a pillow to stay comfy.

Oregon Coast Road Trip: The Northern Region

Cannon Beach

Cannon Beach is the quintessential Oregon Coast Town. It is one of the most iconic and picturesque destinations on the Oregon Coast, I find myself yearning to come back here every year just to experience the feeling only it can give me.

The highlight of this coastal gem is Haystack Rock, a massive sea stack that rises dramatically from the ocean, creating one of the most photographed scenes along the coast! At low tide, you can walk right up to the rock and explore the tide pools around it, which are teeming with marine life like starfish, anemones, and crabs.

Whether you’re spending your days hiking in Ecola State Park, taking in the dramatic coastal views, or simply relaxing on the beach, Cannon Beach offers a perfect blend of nature, art, and coastal charm. It’s a place where you can unwind and immerse yourself in the peaceful rhythm of the ocean.

Here are a few of my top things to do while in Cannon Beach:

Get Pastries or Beer in Town

The town itself filled with cute galleries, boutique shops, and cozy cafes serving up fresh pastries and local coffee. My favorite spot is Sleepy Monk Coffee Roasters. There’s also a selection of excellent restaurants, many with stunning ocean views, where you can enjoy fresh seafood and Pacific Northwest cuisine! One of the most popular spots in town is Pelican Brewing!

Have a Campfire in front of Haystack Rock

Having a campfire on the beach at Cannon Beach is a truly magical experience! As the sun sets and the sky fills with color, you can gather around a fire with friends or family. With designated bonfire areas and firewood available locally (find it at the Mariner Market), it’s the perfect way to unwind and enjoy the peaceful beauty of the coast!

Visit Ecola State Park

Ecola State Park offers some of the most breathtaking views on the Oregon Coast. Located just north of Cannon Beach, it features dramatic cliffs, lush forests, and sweeping vistas of the Pacific Ocean.

The park offers several scenic trails, including the Ecola Point Trail, which leads to stunning viewpoints of Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock. Whether you’re looking to explore the forest or take in beautiful ocean views, Ecola State Park is a must-visit for nature lovers and photographers!

Visit Devil’s Cauldron & Elk Flats Trail

If you drive a bit South of Cannon Beach you will come across an unassuming pull off. If you pull off here and take the trail to the left you will find yourself at an absolutely stunning cliff spot– when I first discovered this location I was absolutely blown away by it’s beauty! You can also head to the right to discover the Devil’s Cauldron– an absolutely gorgeous view in it’s own right.

Manzanita Oregon

Every Summer my family and I would drive down from Seattle to a cute white washed house in Manzanita. We would spend the days trying to body surf in the ocean, taking walks in the cute town and enjoying quiet nights next to a campfire on the beach.

Just a 20 minute drive down the coast from Cannon Beach, Manzanita is a quiet coastal town known for its stunning seven-mile beach and laid-back vibe.

Nestled between the ocean and the foothills of Neahkahnie Mountain, it’s the perfect spot for a peaceful retreat. It’s small downtown, which features local shops, cozy cafes, and art galleries, is just steps from the beach. With breathtaking views and a relaxed atmosphere, Manzanita is a hidden gem on the Oregon Coast.

Here are a few of my top things to do while in Manzanita Oregon:

Grab Coffee in Town

Start your morning in Manzanita by grabbing a latte or freshly brewed coffee at Manzanita Coffee Co., a cozy, locally-loved coffee shop tucked in the heart of town! With your warm cup in hand, head down beach for a peaceful walk along the shoreline. This is my personal favorite way to start a morning in Manzanita.

Walk the Beach

After grabbing your cup of coffee (or chai if your me!) walk the few steps to the beach. In Manzanita the beach extends for over 7 miles, making walks along the beach one of the top things to do! To the north, the towering Neahkahnie Mountain creates a dramatic backdrop, while to the south, the beach opens up into a gorgeous horizon.

Hike Neahkahnie Mountain

If you are looking for an adventure, head out on this 10 mile hike to the top of Neahkahine Mountain! The trail weaves through lush forests of moss-covered trees before opening up to stunning views of the coastline and the expansive Pacific Ocean.

Oregon Coast Road Trip: The Central Region

Cape Kiwanda (Pacific City)

One of my favorite spots in the central coast is Pacific City. Here you can find another gorgeous Haystack rock, reminiscent of the one in Cannon Beach. The main difference is Pacific City tends to be much quieter and has the added bonus of the gorgeous Cape Kiwanda.

Cape Kiwanda is famous for its golden sandstone cliffs, rolling dunes, and panoramic views of the Pacific. In Pacific City, you can grab a local brew at Pelican Brewing Company, enjoy fresh seafood, or watch dories (traditional fishing boats) launch straight from the beach. Whether you’re hiking the dunes, catching a sunset, or just soaking in the views, this area is a must-visit for nature and beach lovers alike!

The best things to do in Cape Kiwanda & Pacific City include:

Explore Cape Kiwanda Park

Exploring Cape Kiwanda is an adventure filled with breathtaking views and unique experiences. Start by hiking up the sand dunes, which offer a great workout but reward you with stunning panoramic views of the ocean.

From the top, you can watch waves crash dramatically against the sandstone cliffs. To find the spot in the photograph above we wandered a bit farther north after cresting over the sand dunes, it’s a bit hidden but if you explore the different cliffs around Cape Kiwanda you will definitely stumble upon it.

Safety Note: Be mindful of safety signs and avoid unstable cliff edges, as the sandstone can erode.

Enjoy Clam Chowder with a View

After exploring Cape Kiwanda for the afternoon, head to Pelican Brewing Company, right on the beach for creamy clam chowder, fresh fish and chips and award-winning craft beers! You can grab a table with a gorgeous view of the beach, or eat outside right off the sand.

Drive on the beach

One of the coolest things you can do in this area, is drive out onto the sand! It’s a fun and memorable way to explore this beautiful stretch of coastline, but always respect the natural environment and leave no trace.

The main access point is near Cape Kiwanda, where you’ll often see dory boats launching directly into the ocean.

Before heading onto the sand, ensure your vehicle is equipped for the terrain—four-wheel drive is highly recommended to navigate the soft sand without getting stuck.

Always check for local regulations and tide conditions, and stick to the designated areas, keep your speed low, and watch for pedestrians and wildlife.

Devils Punchbowl & Thor’ Well

If you are looking for some unique landscapes on the Central Oregon coast, you can visit Thor’s Well and Devil’s Punchbowl!

Thor’s Well, located near Cape Perpetua, is a natural sinkhole where the ocean appears to spill into the earth, it’s especially beautiful during high tide.

The Devil’s Punchbowl, near Otter Rock, is a massive rock formation carved by the sea, creating a swirling cauldron of waves during rough surf. Both sites are beautiful examples of nature’s power and are perfect stops for adventurous travelers and photographers seeking unique coastal views!

Heceta Head Lighthouse & Florence

A few years back, my mom invited my sister and I on a Summer road trip down to Florence, Oregon. I had no idea what Florence was like, but wow was I in for a treat!

Florence, Oregon, is a charming coastal town with a fun hippie vibe to it and gorgeous views. We ate at some lovely restaurants- breakfast at Sweet Magnolia Cafe is wonderful and dinner at Homegrown Public House & Eatery.

One of my favorite parts about Florence was it’s gorgeous coastline, the views around this are are absolutely unreal.

Explore Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

If you are looking for an adventure, the Oregon Dunes National park is a great spot to go! You can go hiking, sand boarding or rent a dune buggy or ATV. The park has over 40 miles of designated ORV (Off-Road Vehicle) areas, where visitors can ride the dunes, including the Sand Lake and Coos Bay areas.

If you don’t have your own dune buggy, there are plenty of local companies in Florence that offer rentals and guided tours! Be sure to follow all park regulations to protect the environment and ensure an enjoyable experience.

Photograph the Lighthouse and Keepers House

Just north of Florence, the Heceta Head Lighthouse stands on a dramatic cliff, offering stunning ocean views. The lighthouse, one of the brightest on the coast, is a popular spot for adventurers (like myself!) who enjoy hiking and photography.

The walk and views to the lighthouse are lovely, and you can even enter inside the lighthouse! I loved taking photos here, and it was personally the highlight of my trip.

Oregon Coast Road Trip: The Southern Region

Samuel H Boardman State Scenic Corridor & Brookings

Deep in southern Oregon, sits a stunning stretch of coastline called Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor. When I was first starting out photography, it was one of the first places I wanted to go after seeing it countless times online.

After finally making it there, I have returned as many times as I could, the dramatic cliffs, lush forests and breathtaking views drew me in and it’s still one of my favorite spots on the Oregon Coast.

With a network of hiking trails that lead through coastal forests and along rugged cliffs, Samuel H. Boardman is a perfect spot for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking peace and beauty on the Oregon Coast.

Here are a few of the best things to do in Samuel H. Boardman:

Hike The Natural Bridges Trail

The Natural Bridges Trail is a short, easy hike in Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor, offering stunning views of unique rock formations carved by the sea. The trail leads to the iconic Natural Bridges, where large arches span across the ocean. It is a stunning spot for photography and the main reason I initially wanted to visit this area.

I believe they have actually blocked off access to the bridge, as it can be quite dangerous. If you happen to be there and want to make it to the bridge, head down the trail to the right (if you are looking out to the ocean). It will wind through the forest and deposit you onto the bridge, making access quite a bit safer.

If there are signs warning against it, I would suggest heeding them.

Another gorgeous photography spot is Secret Beach. True to it’s name, this beach offers a secluded and picturesque escape along the Oregon Coast.

The beach is accessible via a short but steep hike through lush forest, leading to a lovely cove with golden sand, rocky sea stacks, and crystal-clear water. The rugged cliffs surrounding the beach, combined with dramatic tides and shifting weather, make Secret Beach one of the most beautiful and serene locations in the area.

Explore Harris Beach State Park

Another scenic coastal park known for its dramatic rock formations and expansive views of the Pacific Ocean, is Harris Beach State Park. The park offers beautiful sandy beaches, perfect for picnicking, beach combing, and wildlife watching.

With well-maintained trails and campsites nestled among lush coastal vegetation, Harris Beach is a peaceful spot to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of southern Oregon.

Oregon Coast Road Trip 3 Day Itinerary:

This 3-day road trip gives you a perfect blend of coastal charm, scenic hikes, and adventure along one of the most beautiful sections of the Oregon Coast!

Day 1: Cannon Beach & Ecola State Park.

Spend the morning grabbing pastries at Sleepy Monk Coffee (get there early, they sell out!) and head out on a beach walk. The afternoon is spent hiking through Ecola State Park (try the Clatsop Loop Trail if your feeling adventurous!) End the day grabbing beers at Pelican Brewing and trying their clam chowder!

Day 2: Manzanita & Elk Flats Trail (Devil’s Cauldron)

Venture 20 minutes down the coast to explore the cute town of Manzanita. Grab coffee and venture down their 7 mile long beach for a peaceful morning. In the afternoon head to Oswald West State Park to do Elk Flats trail to see the Devils Cauldron and amazing cliff spot. Head back to Manzanita or Nehalem Bay State Park for the evening and watch sunset over the ocean or enjoy a yummy seafood dinner.

Day 3: Ecola State Park & Tillamok Bay

Start your day with another visit to Ecola State Park, this time hiking to Indian Beach. In the afternoon head south to explore Cape Meares State Park & Lighthouse. If you have time stop by the Tillamok Cheese Factory to enjoy a tour and cheese samples! End the day back in Cannon Beach with a lovely campfire on the beach.

Oregon Coast Road Trip 5 Day Itinerary:

This 5-day itinerary gives you time to enjoy the serene beauty of Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor while still hitting some of the most iconic spots along the coast, including Cannon Beach, Manzanita, and Pacific City. With more time for hiking, exploring, and relaxing, you’ll leave with unforgettable memories of Oregon’s rugged coastline.

Day 1 & 2 remain the same as above

Day 3: Pacific City & Cape Kiwanda.

Start your day by driving the 1.5 hrs from Manzanita or Cannon Beach to Pacific City. Spend the afternoon exploring Cape Kiwanda Park and finish the day off with dinner at Pelican Brewing.

Day 4: Florence & Heceta Head Lighthouse

Start your day with a beautiful 2 hour drive down the coast to Florence, Oregon. Stopping to see Devils Punchbowl and Thor’s Well on your way down. Spend the afternoon exploring Heceta Head Lighthouse. After your lovely stop at the lighthouse drive the final 2 hrs 45 mins to Samuel H Boardman.

Day 5: Samuel H Boardman State Scenic Corridor

Spend your morning exploring the Natural Bridges. Then continue along the coast, stopping at Secret Beach, Arch Rock Lookout and Whaleshead Beach. In the evening watch the sunset over the ocean and reflect on what a wonderful trip you have had.

This extended 7-day itinerary provides more time to explore the stunning Oregon Coast at a leisurely pace, with the option to spend additional time in Cannon Beach and Samuel H. Boardman, ensuring you can fully appreciate the beauty of each stop.
