Road Tripping Central Oregon: FAQ

How Many Days Do You Need For This Road Trip?

To fully enjoy each spot and activities along this Central Oregon road trip, I’d recommend 7-9 days for a well-paced experience. You can of course do it in a shorter time period if you cut out a few spots but if you have the time, I would say- take it!

What Is The Best Month To Road Trip Oregon?

The best months for a Central Oregon road trip are late spring (May-June) or early fall (September-October). During these times, you’ll experience mild weather, fewer crowds, and beautiful scenery.

Late spring offers lush landscapes and powerful waterfalls, while early fall brings stunning fall foliage and perfect hiking conditions. If you’re planning on visiting Crater Lake, note that the Rim Drive usually opens in late June, so plan accordingly.

Other great options:

  • Summer (July-August): In summer, all locations are fully accessible with ideal weather for hiking and outdoor activities.
  • Winter (December- February): In winter, Crater Lake is stunning with snow, but some roads may be closed. Bend offers winter sports, and Umpqua Hot Springs is quite inviting in the colder weather.

Where To Start Your Central Oregon Road Trip

I would plan to start in Portland, Oregon.

Starting your road trip in Portland is ideal for a few reasons:

  1. Accessibility: Portland is easily reachable by plane, and it’s well-connected to major highways, making it a great starting point for a road trip. You can also easily rent a car or van here.
  2. Urban Adventure: Before hitting the scenic landscapes, you can explore Portland’s vibrant food scene, local shops, and outdoor spaces like Forest Park.
  3. Proximity: It’s close to key destinations like the Columbia River Gorge and Silver Falls State Park, so you can kick off your trip with some natural beauty just a short drive away.

Must- See Stops On A Central Oregon Road Trip

Columbia River Gorge

Stretching along the border between Oregon and Washington, the Columbia River Gorge is one of the most iconic landscapes in the Pacific Northwest, as well as one of the most accessible!

This 80-mile-long canyon is carved by the Columbia River, offering dramatic cliffs, lush forests, and countless waterfalls.

The Gorge is a paradise for outdoor lovers, with endless opportunities for hiking, windsurfing, and spotting wildlife.

Whether you’re seeking adventure or a peaceful escape, the Columbia River Gorge is a wonderful starting point for exploring Central Oregon.

Here are a few of my top things to do while in Columbia River Gorge:

Marvel at Multnomah Falls

Multnomah Falls, Oregon’s tallest waterfall, is one of the most accessible and awe-inspiring attractions in the Columbia River Gorge. Cascading 620 feet in two tiers, the falls are just a short pull-off from Interstate 84, making it a super convenient road trip stop.

A quick walk from the parking lot leads to the viewing area, where you can admire the falls up close or venture up to the Bridge for a higher vantage point. Whether you’re passing through or planning a longer stay, Multnomah Falls is a perfect stop to experience the beauty of the Gorge.

Hike the trail in between waterfalls

The Columbia River Gorge is a perfect spot for waterfall lovers! You can find many trails that take you to some amazing falls in a short time.

One of the most popular options is the 2.4-mile loop between Multnomah Falls and Wahkeena Falls, which winds through lush forests, mossy rocks, and serene streams

The trails are very well-maintained and accessible for most hikers, offering a perfect way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Gorge.

Photograph the Rowena Crest Viewpoint

Another wonderful option in the Columbia River Gorge area is to venture away from the waterfalls and head to the Rowena Crest Viewpoint, one of the most iconic vistas in the Columbia River Gorge.

From this vantage point, you can capture the iconic horseshoe bend in the road, beautiful views of the river, and the distinctive wind-swept cliffs of the Gorge.

Photography Tip: Head there during sunrise or sunset! The light at these times will create some of the most beautiful photos.

Visit Vista House at Crown Point

Perched high above the Columbia River Gorge, the Vista House offers stunning panoramic views of the river and surrounding landscapes.

Built in 1917 as a rest stop along the Historic Columbia River Highway, it now serves as a scenic overlook and visitor center.

This is a great spot to stop at after enjoying a day of waterfalls!

Where To Stay

Mt. Hood- Trillium Lake & Lost Lake

One of my favorite stops on this road trip is Mt. Hood! This mountain, (Oregon’s tallest!) is a stunning mountain to explore and an iconic spot in Oregon.

I have returned to Trillium Lake time and time again to photograph Mt. Hood- in my opinion it is one of the best photography spots in all of Oregon!

Here are a few of my top things to do near Mt. Hood:

Camp at Trillium Lake

If you want a lovely Summer getaway, you can’t beat camping at Trillium Lake.

You have a few choices- you can camp at the Trillium Lake campground, or take your chances and look for a wilderness camping spot around the lake.

The campground features 30 sites, many with stunning views of the lake and mountain, making it a perfect spot for photography, fishing, and stargazing.

When I did this road trip, my friend and I forgot to make reservations at the campground- luckily we were able to find a pull off along the side of the lake and camp there! Tons of other people were doing it and we definitely got lucky with our spot.

Stay at The Lost Lake Resort

Another great place to explore near Mt. Hood is Lost Lake. This beautiful lake has a lodge sitting on it, making it a great spot for family getaways!

With both rustic cabins and lakeside campsites, it’s the perfect place for outdoor enthusiasts looking to relax or explore. Visitors can enjoy hiking, fishing, and kayaking on the tranquil waters of Lost Lake, or simply unwind with stunning views of Mount Hood.

You will want to make sure you plan on booking early, as this lodge can sell out fast in the Summer!

Bend Oregon

Bend, Oregon- the adventure capital of Oregon! Sitting right in the middle of Central Oregon, Bend is a perfect escape for adventure lovers. In one day you can be rock climbing at Smith Rock in the morning, heading to a cute food truck for lunch, grabbing your mountain bike and hitting the trails and finishing your day off at a brewery! Now that’s my type of spot.

The best things to do in Bend, Oregon Include:

Rock Climb At Smith Rock State Park

Known as a climber’s paradise, Smith Rock offers over a thousand routes. It is one of the most beautiful locations I have ever rock climbed at and is a world-renowned climbing destination, attracting climbers of all levels!

Known for its steep rock faces and breathtaking views, the park offers a range of climbing experiences, from beginner-friendly routes to challenging multi-pitch climbs.

Check out my blog post on the top adventures in Bend Oregon for more information on top climbs!

Try Out Mountain Biking

Just a short drive or bike from town you can find an extensive network of trails that cater to all skill levels.

The city’s diverse terrain, ranges from high-desert single tracks to lush forest trails.

Popular areas like the Phil’s Trail Complex and the Skyline Trail offer miles of smooth, flowy trails for intermediate riders, while the more technical terrain around the Cascade Mountains challenges even the most experienced bikers.

With a vibrant mountain biking community, top-notch bike shops, and a range of trail options, Bend is the perfect destination for biking enthusiasts looking to explore the heart of Central Oregon.

Walk the Downtown

Downtown Bend is a charming area that’s perfect for a leisurely stroll. With its tree-lined streets, unique boutiques, local cafes, and art galleries, there’s always something to explore!

After shopping or grabbing a bite, you can relax by the Deschutes River, take a walk along the riverfront trail, or enjoy local brews at one of the many nearby craft breweries.

Painted Hills

A bit off the beaten path, the Painted Hills, is one of Oregon’s most unique landscapes. The beautiful red soil create a gorgeous spot especially at sunrise or sunset when the hues are at their most intense.

With easy walking trails and designated viewpoints, the Painted Hills are a beautiful destination to visit!

In saying this, I did want to be honest and say that while this was a gorgeous area, it was a bit underwhelming. The main trail (Painted Cove Trail) is really the only spot that truly looks like Mars- since it is so far off the beaten path I would only recommend going if you really want these shots!

The best things to do in Joshua Tree National Park Include:

Photograph the Painted Cove Trail

The Painted Cove Trail is a super short, easy hike that offers an up-close view of the Painted Hills. This 0.25-mile loop trail winds through the cove, showcases the striking red, yellow, and orange hues that make the Painted Hills famous.

As you walk along the trail, interpretive signs explain the area’s geology and history, enhancing the experience. The trail is accessible and perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in the beauty of this otherworldly landscape in just a brief visit.

Umpqua National Forest

The Umpqua National Forest is by far one of my favorite areas in Oregon– it’s a stunning natural haven in southern Oregon, known for its lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and serene hot springs. Highlights include the magical Toketee Falls, the relaxing Umpqua Hot Springs, and countless trails that weave through old-growth forests and along crystal-clear rivers!

Some of my favorite things to do in Umpqua National Forest include:

Soak In The Umpqua Hot Springs

Umpqua Hot Springs is nestled in the heart of Umpqua National Forest. Perched along a hillside overlooking the North Umpqua River, these natural pools offer hot, mineral-rich waters perfect for relaxation.

The short, steep hike to the springs adds to the adventure, and the breathtaking forest views make it a must-visit spot for nature lovers seeking a peaceful soak! This is one of my favorite spots we took photos on the entire trip– just make sure to get there early before tons of people show up so you can grab one of the many pools.

Photograph Toketee Falls

An absolutely stunning waterfall, Toketee Falls is just down the way from Umpqua Hot Springs- making them a perfect day trip! Toketee Falls is a short hike from the parking lot and offers a lovely viewing station. If you want to get down to the falls like we did, you slip past the railing on the far side and you should find a rope leading you down a steep section, from there you can just hike down and enjoy hanging out at the waterfall!

Marvel at Watson Falls

Watson Falls, one of Oregon’s tallest waterfalls, cascades 272 feet down a lush basalt cliff in Umpqua National Forest. A short, scenic hike leads to a viewing platform, offering breathtaking views of the roaring falls surrounded by mossy greenery. Its serene beauty and dramatic height make it a must-see destination for waterfall enthusiasts and hikers alike.

Silver Falls State Park

Another stunning destination in Central Oregon is Silver Falls State Park, often called the “Crown Jewel” of Oregon’s state parks. It is famous for its breathtaking Trail of Ten Falls. This loop trail winds through lush forest and takes you behind several stunning waterfalls, including the iconic South Falls.

This was such a fun adventure, walking behind these huge waterfalls is such an amazing experience!

Here are a few of the best things to do in Silver Falls State Park:

Hike the Trail of Ten Falls

Explore this scenic 7.2-mile loop that takes you past and even behind several stunning waterfalls, offering breathtaking views and amazing photo opportunities.

Crater Lake is a breathtaking natural wonder and the deepest lake in the United States! Its vivid blue waters, formed in a collapsed volcanic caldera, are surrounded by rugged cliffs and scenic viewpoints. Visitors can enjoy hiking, boat tours, and panoramic vistas. This is an easy stop off the highway and well worth it.

Here are a few of the best things to do in Crater Lake National Park:

Scenic Rim Drive

Scenic Rim Drive is a scenic 33-mile loop around Crater Lake, offering spectacular views from numerous overlooks and access to popular trailheads. The drive showcases the lake’s deep blue waters, rugged cliffs, and surrounding forests, making it a must-do experience for visitors to Crater Lake National Park.
