In the far north, perched along a fjord sits a mountain range called “The Lyngen Alps” This is Lyngenfjord Norway.

Lyngen- meaning calm, perfectly describes the feeling one gets when they find their way into this little slice of Arctic paradise. 

I visited in the Summer, July, to be exact. As we drove up the peninsula I couldn’t help the little gasps of awe that escaped my lips.

The scenery, even just on the drive, was unlike anything I had seen before. Something about this piece of Norway felt more quaint and quiet than the rest of the landscapes we had meandered through so far.

Maybe it was the way you only saw a cabin or two for miles, or the wide open spaces and the mountains surrounding you on all sides. Either way, I was a goner- it was love at first sight.

Where Is Lyngenfjord Norway?

The Lygenfjord sits in the Arctic circle at the top of Norway. East of the city of Tromso the grand fjord is a beautiful destination. Drive any farther North and you’ve just about made it to Finnmark- the very top of Norway! 

You can find a variety of little towns here such as Skervoy, Storslett and Olderdalen. 

The Lyngen Alps

The Lyngen Alps make up much of the Lyngenfjord area and are about 56 miles long and 9 miles wide. There are 140 glaciers in the Lygen Alps and is a huge attraction to those who ski tour

The area has a wonderful mix of adventures, as well as lovely coastal towns and a great place to view the northern lights!

How To Get To Lyngenfjord Norway

If you are coming from outside the country the best place to fly into is Tromso. You could also find the smaller airports of Bardufoss and Sorkjeson. You will generally have to fly into Oslo first and then continue on to Tromso (TOS)

The main airlines are Norwegian, SAS and Wideroe.

How To Get To Lyngenfjord from Tromso

Once you are in Tromso there are multiple options to make your way to the Lyngen area. You can take a bus from Tromso, ride an express boat or rent your own vehicle and take a ferry!

I would personally recommend having a rental car so you can have the freedom to explore- this is not an area where you can easily walk from place to place. The towns are few and far between. 

You can also begin your road trip farther south in the Lofoten Islands and drive all the way up to Lygnen- it is a long drive but you will see tons of beautiful sights!

When To Visit Lyngenfjord Norway?

Lyngenfjord is a stunning area to visit in many seasons, the best of which are Summer, Fall and Winter- all for very different types of travelers!

Lyngenfjord In Summer

I visited in the Summer, at the height of the midnight sun. This far north, the sun never sank below the horizon and thus there was never any darkness. This makes for some stunning sunsets and sunrises (that last for hours at a time!) but can make it quite difficult to sleep. 

During the Summer you can hike, take long scenic drives, take dips in the cold fjord and have campfires along the peninsula. It is a gorgeous time to be here- we saw reindeer, moose and beautiful wildflowers.

Lygenfjord in the Winter

Winter is also a huge hit here in the North, yet for a very different type of traveler. The Winter draws many ski tourers who are lured here by the large peaks and couliers of the Lyngen Alps. Don’t worry if you aren’t that adventurous, you can still snowshoe, go snowmobiling, and watch for the northern lights.

Lygenfjord in Fall

The final recommended season is Autumn. This time of year looks particularly cozy as the landscapes turn a variety of orange and red, the days start to get shorter and the weather chillier. At this time of year you can still get lucky and see the northern lights- without the frigid snow!

Where To Stay In Lyngenfjord Norway

In Lyngen you won’t find many hotels. Instead it is much more normal to find cute cabins for rent perched amongst the countryside. 

Below you will find 4 options that I think would be beautiful places to stay while visiting Lyngenfjord, Norway.

Aurora Fjords Cabin: These beautiful cabins are perched on the water with floor to ceiling glass windows facing out towards the mountains and the sea.

Each unit comes with a small kitchen, bathroom and small living room and bedroom. While small these cabins strike me as one of those places you will remember for a long time! 

Lyngen Ski: Lyngen Ski is your quintessential log cabin vibe. With 4 bedrooms, a large balcony and hot tub along with a private beach this is the perfect place to rent out with a group. You can even ski from the property!

Lyngen North Igloo: If you are looking for a unique stay- look no further than the Lyngen North Igloo’s! You can fall asleep under the northern lights or watch the sunrise from your bed.

What To Do In Lyngenfjord Norway?

Hiking In The Lyngen Alps

With all of the gorgeous mountains at your doorstep, the Lyngen Alps are a wonderful place to go hiking! 

I loved the trails here- with little red cabins dotted amongst them, cute sheep wandering the path and glacier rivers I felt like I was hiking in a Nordic fairy tale. 

Here are some of the top hikes in the area: 

Blasvatnet Lake- a gorgeous alpine lake that is a beautiful turquoise. Probably the most famous hike in the region, and while the actual trail isn’t as pretty as some of the others, the view at the end is wonderful! Find more info here.

The Steindalsbreen Glacier- this was my favorite hike we did while there! You follow a gorgeous river up a beautiful valley until you hit a stunning glacier! It is a bit longer of a hike so you will want to leave the whole day. Find more info here

Lyngstuva- More of a walk than a hike, this lovely trail takes you to the outermost point on the Lyngen Peninsula. It is said to be a great area to watch the Northern Lights! Find more info here. 

The Gorsa Bridge- Hike to a stunning bridge over a waterfall in Northern Norway. In the Summer thrill seekers can even bungee jump off of it! Find more info here.

Skiing In Lygenfjord Norway

Ski touring is a huge hit here in the Lyngen Alps. The mountains here rise majestically out of the Arctic Sea and feature “immaculate snow conditions” AND one of the longest ski seasons! You can even do a “sail to ski” expedition where you live aboard a sailboat! 

This is a wonderful place to explore for advanced back country skiers- with beautiful weather, snow and the chance to see the Northern lights, it’s hard to ask for more!

Go For A Scenic Drive

Lygen is a beautiful driving destination- just hop on the Fv312 and head North! The drive is short but gorgeous- with a view of the fjord and mountain ranges on both sides you will have a hard time deciding which direction to look in!

Climb The Steindalsbreen Glacier

We already chatted about hiking to the Steindalsbreen Glacier- but did you know you can climb it as well?

If you are looking for a bit of a challenge you can hire a guide who will give you equipment and lead you up the Glacier. I did this while I was there and it was an adventure I will remember for a lifetime!

Go On A Photography Tour

If you are a photographer I promise you will have the time of your life in the Lyngen Alps- I couldn’t decide where to turn my camera. I was so excited at all of the views!

You can hop on a photography tour or just wing it and take your car out and explore- that’s what I did! Summer was amazing because of the midnight sun, the golden hour lasted for more like 3!

See The Northern Lights

From Mid September to the end of March, the Lyngen Alps become one of the best places in Norway to see the Northern Lights! Watch the Aurora dance over your cabin while you sip hot cocoa- sounds like the perfect way to spend a Winter evening to me 🙂

Go Dog Sledding

Want a unique way to see the Lyngen Alps landscape? Go dog sledding! In the Winter you can experience a traditional dog sled. You get to learn all about the animals, meet your huskies and then take off on an exciting ride!
