Don’t have time to read it now? Save it for later!

This 4 day Tofino Itinerary will give you a taste of what Vancouver Island is really like.

Opening my bleary eyes I look out at the scene through my window, raindrops gently drip down the window pane, framing a scene of crashing waves, tall pine trees and lush forest.

Off in the distance I hear seagulls calling out and a little kid laughing as he plays in the surf. This is Tofino- a temperate rain-forest on the coast of Vancouver Island, a place where the wild still exists in abundance.

What Is The Best Time Of Year To Go To Tofino?

Since Tofino is located in a temperate rain-forest, you can access it year round! Vancouver Island rarely receives snow and is beautiful in any season. The best time of year really depends on what you are looking for.

Summer brings more crowds and nicer weather. More hikes are accessible nearby and it just seems more enjoyable to try surfing when the weather isn’t as intense.

Winter on the other hand brings the quintessential moody weather of the Pacific Northwest. It rains almost every day here in the Winter but the lush rain forest, and beautiful coastline are suited for it. There is a beauty in storm watching here and meandering through the forest as the rain pitter-patters around you.

What Is The Best Month To Visit Tofino?

June-July

If you are looking for longer days to enjoy the beaches on, warmer weather (up to 60 degrees F) and clearer hikes I would recommend the early Summer months.

December- February

If you are looking for storm watching, cozy days by the fireside, no crowds and surfing!

Where Is Tofino Located?

Tofino is located on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Vancouver Island is, you guessed it, an island off of the coast of Vancouver, BC. In fact it is the largest island off the west coast of North America. Running 50 miles wide and nearly 285 miles long this island has tons to offer.

This island is covered with gorgeous old growth forests, snow covered mountain peaks and a gorgeous coastline. It is one of the most amazing places in the world for wildlife, whale watching, and hiking.

Tofino itself is located in a temperate rain forest and boasts gorgeous hikes and surfing opportunities.

How To Get To Tofino

Since Tofino is located on an island you will have to take a ferry to get there. There are two main options.

Getting To Tofino From Washington State

If you are visiting Tofino from Washington in the US you can take a couple of different routes:

Port Angeles- Victoria- Tofino.

This route involves taking a ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria, BC (1hr and ½) and then driving 4.5 hours to Tofino. This journey will take you around 6 hours + the amount of time it takes you to get to Port Angeles.

You will book the ferry through- Coho Ferry

Seattle- Victoria- Tofino

This route involves taking a ferry from Seattle, WA to Victoria, BC (2 hrs 45 mins) and then driving 4.5 hours to Tofino. This journey will take you around 7 hours 15 mins + the amount of time it takes you to get to Seattle.

This ferry is a passenger only ferry so you would have to rent a car in Victoria for the rest of the journey. If you want to avoid that I would recommend taking the Port Angeles Ferry.

You will book the ferry through- Victoria Clipper

The third route involves driving from Washington State to Vancouver and taking a ferry from there- you can see the directions for this one below.

Getting To Tofino From Vancouver, BC

Vancouver- Ferry- Tofino

This route involves taking a ferry from Vancouver, BC (Horseshoe Bay) to Nanaimo (Departure Bay) and then driving to Tofino. This ferry is a half an hour long and the drive after that is almost 3 hours exactly. This journey will take you 4.5 hours total + the time it takes you to get to Vancouver BC.

You will book this ferry through- B.C Ferries

Ferry Information

A note on the ferries- these ferries recommend that you make a reservation ahead of time. The tickets are quite pricey ($200+ USD round trip) so I would recommend carpooling with friends to split the cost.

The buying process is a bit arduous and they give you different time options (with different price tags attached) along with different buying options. I went ahead and just paid in full at the time of booking but you can opt to pay half online and the rest when you get there if you are unsure if you want to commit fully.

4 Day Tofino Itinerary

Tofino Itinerary: Day 1

Today is your travel day! Get to the ferry early so you have more time today to explore.

When you arrive in Tofino you will most likely be hungry- make a stop at the grocery store in town or grab dinner at the Schooner Restaurant.

After you get to your hotel and get settled it’s time to go check out a beach! Grab your rain jacket and let’s head to Cox Bay Beach– if you are staying at Pacific Sands Resort this is right out your front door!

Check Out My Tofino, BC Wall Art!

Tofino Itinerary: Day 2

Your first full day in Tofino! After waking up to the sound of waves crashing you can go for a morning walk on the beach and then grab coffee and donuts (or a bagel sandwich!) in town at Rhino Coffee House.

Take your time and meander around town, I loved checking out the cute surf boutique- Storm | The Tofino Surf Shop and Merge, a boutique store filled with trendy artisan goods.

After you are all fueled up it is time to hit up a classic hike. Cox Bay Lookout!

Cox Bay Lookout is a short (1.6 miles RT) but steep hike overlooking Cox Bay, Chesterman Beach and Clayoquot Sound. This trail can be a bit hard to find so refer to directions from this blog post and you should be just fine!

After hiking the lookout it’s time for food! Head to Tacofino for lunch and grab their famous fish tacos or burritos! My friends swore their chicken taco was the best they had ever had and I (a pescatarian) loved the fish taco!

After cleaning up a bit at the hotel it becomes a bit of a choose your own adventure vibe.

Option #1: Check out another beach. Mackenzie Beach, Chesterman Beach and Long Beach are all great options.

Option #2: Hop in a sauna. Tuff City Saunas has the cutest little wood barrel saunas you can rent out for up to 6 people for 2 hours. If you are staying at Pacific Sands this is right on the property!

Option #3: Have a fire by the beach. On Makenzie and Chesterman beaches you are able to have a fire as long as it is contained in an off the ground fire appliance. If you are staying at Pacific Sands they have gas fire pits available for you!

Tofino Itinerary: Day 3

Begin your day today by grabbing coffee and pastries at Tofitian Cafe. Today, you have a couple of options before you head out the following afternoon.

Option #1: Hike The Rainforest Loop: This is what we did on our third day and I loved it! Up until now you haven’t been able to experience the real lushness of what Tofino’s rainforests have to offer. Enter into a beautiful world of ferns, and old growth trees.

This loop is located in Pacific Rim National Park and does require a pass which you can purchase in the parking lot area.

There are two loops- loop A and loop B. Loop A was closed when we got there so we opted for Loop B, across the highway- this 1.2 mile loop trail was absolutely gorgeous and so perfect on a rainy day.

Option #2: Visit A Floating Sauna: If you didn’t grab time in a sauna yesterday this is your 2nd chance! This one though, is much more exciting- because this sauna is floating!

Take a short, scenic boat ride to the wood burning sauna and enjoy a day without WIFI or cell phone connection on the Clayoquot Sound. You can book this excursion through Tofino Resort and Marina!

Option #3: Go Whale Watching or Bear Watching: Tofino has access to some amazing wildlife and what better way to enjoy that than from a boat! You can go on a Bear Watching Tour April- October and a Whale Watching Tour  March- October.

Bear watching tours will typically be around 2.5 hours on calm waters around Meares Island and will look out for black bears.

On a whale watching tour you can get excited about seeing orcas, humpback whales, gray whales, sea lions, harbor seals and bald eagles!

Option #4: Visit A Hot Springs: Looking for a unique, all day experience? This 6 hour long Hot Springs Tour includes a boat ride, rain forest boardwalk, hot springs soaking and wildlife viewing. Talk about the best of both worlds!

Option #5: Go Surfing: If you are feeling adventurous you can rent wet-suits and surfboards and try your hand at surfing! There are many companies around town who offer rentals- I would just google search it and pick the one closest to you!

Tofino Itinerary: Day 4

Sadly, it is time to go home! Depending on what time you booked your return ferry for you may have a couple of hours to kill before heading out. If so I would recommend taking a little walk to Tonquin Beach.

Tonquin Beach has a gorgeous little boardwalk trail to the small beach and overlooks a part of Tofino you have yet to see!

Is Tofino Worth Visiting?

If you love wildlife, bird watching, whale watching, surfing, exploring rugged coastlines and hiking through rain-forests then Tofino is the perfect escape for you!

I really loved visiting Tofino and I think if you are an outdoor lover then you will too. There is so much beautiful wilderness to explore here along with tons of really amazing experiences to be had.

What To Bring To Tofino

When traveling to Tofino there are a couple things you will need to bring if you want to have the best time.

#1 A Rain Jacket this one is non-negotiable, even in the sunny months there is a high chance you will encounter a rainy day or two.

#2: Warm Layers- Tofino rarely gets above 60 degrees F so it is essential to bring some form of warm jackets and leggings for the trip. See below for my top favorite outdoor clothing!

#3: Hiking Boots- If you want to keep your other shoes clean I would recommend bringing hiking boots, extra points if they are waterproof! With all that rain, trails here can get quite muddy.

#4: A Camera Trust me on this one, you will want to capture all of the beauty here in Tofino- there is an endless amount.

#5: A Swimsuit- If you have a hot tub (one can hope!) you will want it, or just for taking a cold dip in the ocean! I love One One Swimwear– enter the code LIANA26654 for 15% OFF

#6: A Wetsuit and Surfboard- Not necessary (you can rent!) but Tofino is one of the best places in the PNW to surf so if you’re into that kinda thing it is worth it to bring them along.
