Where Is Crystal Crane Located?

Crystal Crane Hot Springs is located in Burns, Oregon which is East- Central Oregon!

Burns, Oregon is a desolate town and mostly used as a passageway into the Steens Mountains Range and Alvord Desert!

Crystal Crane Hot Springs Directions From Bend, Oregon

Driving from Bend, Oregon you have about a 2.5 hour drive ahead of you through long stretches of flat grasslands. If you take the US-20 E highway until you hit Burns, Oregon and then turn off onto OR-78 E eventually you will come along Crane Hot Springs on your left!

Alvord Desert to Crystal Crane Hot Springs

Driving from the Alvord Desert you are about 1.5 hours away from the hot springs. Simply head North on Fields-Denio Road until you hit OR-78. Turn left onto the highway and head another 40 miles West until you see Crystal Crane on your right-hand side!

When Is The Best Time To Go To Crystal Crane Hot Springs?

I would argue that late Fall-early Winter would be the best time of year to go to Crystal Crane Hot Springs!

It isn’t too cold out just yet but the slight chill in the air makes the hot springs that much more welcoming! This is also a wonderful time to continue your trip down into the Alvord Desert.

Summer’s in this area get blazing hot, and without shade you may think twice about dipping into even hotter water.

Spring and Winter would also be a great time to visit although if you’re thinking about extending your trip to the Alvord Desert, Spring-time can prove difficult as the desert gets the most amount of rain during this time making it impossible to drive on the flats.

Things To Do At Crystal Crane Hot Springs

Main Hot Springs

The main hot springs are a large pond in the center of the resort. At its deepest it gets to 7’ deep and holds a large amount of people! You will have no problem finding your own little section of the pool. The main hot spring runs at about 101 degrees.

Private Soaking Tub

If you are looking for something a bit more private you can rent out a cedar-wood bathroom for $15 an hour. These bathrooms are equipped with a small changing area, benches, towel hooks and you get to control the temperature of the water piping in!

In Room Hot Tub

If you want something even more secluded- consider renting a teepee for the night! Each teepee has access to a 2 person soaking tub in the teepee or on an enclosed patio!

What To Do Near Crystal Crane Hot Springs

Burns, Oregon doesn’t have much else to do in terms of entertainment- but an hour and a half south lies the Alvord Desert!

Under the shadow of the Steens Mountain range lies the long, cracked playa of the Alvord Desert. Here you can speed across the playa, camp under the stars, and soak in the Alvord Hot Springs- you can check out my blog post on “The Alvord Desert” Here.

What To Bring To Crystal Crane Hot Springs

Microfiber Towel

If you’re not staying at the Inn you will want to have your own towel to dry off! These dry super quickly and stuff down really small.

Swimsuit

I think this may be a given 😉 Unless you’re in the private soaking tubs- then you get to decide if you want to use it or not!

Sandals

I personally love having something easy to slip on after soaking in hot springs- my Chacos are perfect!

Lotion and Lip Balm

While hot springs can be relaxing they are also insanely drying- spare your skin by bringing some lotion and lip balm. Even a hair mask after might be a good idea!
