Driving into Aspen, I couldn’t help but audibly gasp at the scenery surrounding us. The hills were filled with golden aspen trees and the mountains rose up around us, cradling us in their golden grasp.

As we drove through town, I was a goner. “Should we move here??” I excitedly asked my travel partner, Kelsey. The cute little mountain town had grabbed my heart, and it had only taken it 10 minutes.

The town of Aspen is a special place, and during the Fall it comes alive like no other time of year. In this blog post I will go over everything you need to know to have the best trip to Aspen Colorado in the Fall!

The town is quieter, the wildlife is out and roaming around and you can still access many of the best hikes! There really is nothing quite like Aspen Colorado in the Fall.

2. Take A Scenic Drive Up Independence Pass

One of the best drives to take to see fall colors in Colorado is Independence Pass! This pass is apart of the Colorado State Highway 82 and passes over the Continental Divide between Leadville and Aspen.

The road is around 32 miles long and the drive can take anywhere from 45mins- 1.5 hours depending on the amount of stops you make.

The road follows the Roaring Fork river and makes it way through some gorgeous groves of aspens. We spent a few days driving this pass and stopping to take pictures in the aspens!

If you are feeling adventurous, you can also road bike this pass.

Some great stops to make are:

The Grottos: A beautiful area for exploring! With a waterfall, an ice cave and short trails this is a great spot to pull off and have lunch.

3. Photograph The Maroon Bells

The most photographed mountains in North America- The Maroon Bell’s in Aspen, Colorado!

To explore the Maroon Bells you will need a reservation from May- November. You can reserve a parking reservation or shuttle reservation for a day or night option.

If you find that the reservations are sold out you can also try your luck at a day of, walk up tickets.

From my experience, these reservations do go quickly, especially in the Fall and we unfortunately were not able to get any (shout out to the photographers from Unsplash for letting me use their images in this blog!)

If you do manage to get reservations here are some wonderful things to do:

Go Hiking- there are 6 trails you can follow here that will take you through beautiful meadows and along the beautiful Maroon Lake!

Take Photos– Maroon Lake is one of the best spots for photography, and the best time for it will be at sunrise. In fact, according to this blog, you want to be there far before sunrise to set up your tripod and get a good spot!

Sunrise is best as you will get light on the mountain peaks. During sunset the sun will be behind the peaks making it difficult to photograph.

Go Camping– If you are lucky and you visit Aspen in the first weeks of October you can get camping reservations at one of three campgrounds in the Maroon Bells Wilderness!
